Family Board Games

We have played so many fun games through the last few years with our kids, we started early with cooperative games where nobody really wins or loses (good for toddlers), now we play a wide variety of games. In this post, I’ll highlight more your standard games, I have another post (LINK here) reviewing our games that are good for travel (compact!!)

Why play board games? There are many benefits to board games (other than screen-free fun)! My favorite is probably teaching the kids how to take turns and be gracious. They also often help with mathematics skills, strategy and concentration.

Most of my favorites are games I didn’t play as a kid, though we do have a few classics that are favorites among the kids and us.

  1. Blokus: this game is recommended for 7+ but my 4-year-old has gotten quite good at it! It involves strategy so the Mr. and I both enjoy it and the kids do too! The play time is good (maybe 10/15 minutes a game) so you can squeeze a game in easily.
  2. Connect 4: a classic game that is quick and can generally be found for a good price!
  3. Outfoxed!: this one is a cooperative game for preschoolers, but it made the list because my kids still enjoy it – it is a great game of Who Dunnit and definitely gets kids ready to play Clue when they get older.
  4. Scrabble Junior: this is a fun and engaging game with a double-sided board for different skill levels.
  5. Ticket to Ride First Journey: a great strategy game for kids
